Research on Vulnerability in Urban African Populations

Dimension 2 - Unexpected emergencies and high number of dependants

In the absence of insurances (health, death, disability, unemployment) and sufficient legal protections, a variety of unexpected emergencies can devastate already struggling urban households. The informal nature of the Burkinabè economy and living situations are obstacles to implementing protections against these shocks. Furthermore, disadvantaged city residents often have many dependants (children and elderly relatives) whose expenses accumulate, in addition to the already increased cost of living in a city.

Actions to take in this area include: promotion of various types of insurance, creation and promotion of mutual funds, development of formal employment and unions; more accessible and user-friendly justice system.
